Yeah, Everyone’s a Critic

Posted by Lynnster on July 26, 2007

As some know, I am a lover of movies, and even very briefly considered changing majors and schools and going to film school when I was in my early twenties.

I have never walked out of a theater while a film was still running, and I have only once turned off a movie in the middle at home and didn’t finish watching it because it was boring me to tears.  That one would be this one.

One I have always been a little sorry I didn’t do the same, and stop it within the first hour: this one.

That’s all I got, but for god’s sake, don’t rent either or I’ll have to say I told you so.

PS Just wanted to let Jon and Katie know I’m thinking of them and eagerly awaiting word of the upcoming Charlotteness. And much love to everyone else and I miss you all.  I’m not dead, just stuck in the black hole of blogging, apparently.

I absolutely hated Eyes Wide Shut. Hated it, hated it, hated it. But had to watch because it was Kubrick. Wasn’t it?

Eyes Wide Shot would have benefited greatly by losing half of it to the cutting room floor. And if it was supposed to be shocking and controversial, then there’s no hope for me. I was just bored throughout.

Heh heh Jon……oh, I shouldn’t laugh ;) It’s going to be great, don’t get all nervous and stuff. ;)

Yup, Eyes Wide Shut was Kubrick and that’s why it was extra disappointing. I love everything else the man ever did. But I will give it this much, even as bad and boring as it was, it wasn’t anywhere near as boring as In the Bedroom. And that one won Oscars!!!! Augh.

Damn. It’s too late for me on both of them. I’m glad to see your blogging again.

  7. Eyes Wide Shut was just…like watching your friends get high while you stay sober.

    Very confusing and not fun.

Well, I didn’t love Barry Lyndon… Lynnster, we need to get together and do a marathon. At hippie college I took an EXCO class (1 credit, facilitated by students) for watching, discussing, and writing about Kubrick. I love hippie college.

  9. I really loathed Eyes Wide Shut. Like Chez Bez said, if that was supposed to be “shocking” then I’m out of it.
However, I did enjoy In the Bedroom. I liked the way some of the pent-up emotions made the house claustrophic before they completely erupted. Granted, it was slowly paced, but I was on that wave when I watched it.

Hated Eyes Wide Shut as well.
I think Katherine’s assessment is right on.
I’m with SQ, In The Bedroom had such detailed claustrophic moments of not expressing emotions that I found myself tense and holding my breath. But, it’s not a movie I ever, ever, ever, ever, ever ever want to see again.

    Nice to see you back,
    Trace

Rachel, this may surprise you but Barry Lyndon is one of my favorites. I saw it first when I was pretty young and many times since. I’ll agree it’s long and slow but I have always loved it. Heh.

Good to see you Trace… I wouldn’t call it back but I am trying a bit. Still sort of in my black hole of blogging, heh.

Email me and I”ll link you to my new blog.

Uh oh, I liked In the Bedroom. What does that mean?

  16. Naked Lunch is the only movie I didn’t watch the whole way through. And yeah, I had read the novel so I was expecting ickiness; but wasn’t expecting tedium ad nauseam.
